One day in San Miguel, Guanajuato.

Last week, I had to make a last-minute trip to Mexico City to be with my family. But what I thought would be a very sad visit to my home town, was actually kind of bittersweet in the end. Not only did I get to fully enjoy of the company of my family and closest friends, but I also got to visit one of my favorite places in Mexico... Wait for it!

My brother invited me on a one day trip to San Miguel - short for San Miguel de Allende - to check the last details for the wedding... not my wedding, his. 

San Miguel is far from being the typical mexican-touristy all-inclusive resort destination for families with kids or groups of friends looking for cheap fun and parties on the beach. No! This town has class, it is truly a mexican jewel. 

It's streets are full of history and tradition. If you ever go, you will find that there are patios inside every house, restaurant and hotel. These are open spaces in the middle of the building, surrounded by columns or arches, and filled with the echo of birds singing and water falling from the fountain that stands right in the center of it all. 

Because of it's history, cultural importance, and geographic location, San Miguel is home to some of the best mexican restaurants in the country.  The food is UNREAL : If you love mexican food nearly as much as every mexican does, this will be your favorite town in the world.

I had the opportunity to eat lunch at Matilda Hotel-boutique, best mushroom fried quesadillas ever!

My very own personal recommendation: after dinner, go out and look for the guy selling homemade churros con azúcar in front of the Parroquia de San Miguel, the big church in the center of the main square, it is the perfect dessert to share...or not. 

San Miguel is also well known for its artistic ambiance; you can find endless cultural and artistic exhibitions. There are tons of art galleries showcasing artists and decorators from all around the world. There is even an old building - Fabrica La Aurora Centro de Arte y Diseño - that used to be a textile factory, that today houses canvases, sculptures and artisan products of great artists who live in San Miguel.

My trip to San Miguel was short but full of art, food, sunny views, and mexican traditions. No wonder we call it a Pueblo Mágico: magic town. ;)
